چکیده

Metallic foams have good potential for lightweight structures for impact and blast mitigation. Therefore it is important to find out the optimized foam structure (i.e. cell size, shape, relative density, and distribution) to maximise energy absorption. In this paper, quasistatic compression and microstructural characterization of closed-cell aluminium foams of different pore size and cell distributions have been carried out. We present results for two different aluminium metal foams of density 0.49-0.51 g/cc and 0.310.34 g/cc respectively that have been tested in quasi-static compression. The influence of cell geometry and cell topology on quasistatic compression behaviour has been investigated using optical microscope and computed tomography (micro-CT) analysis. It is shown that the deformation is not uniform in the structure and collapse begins at the weakest point. Keywords—Metal foams, micro-CT, cell topology, quasistatic compression.

Effect of Fe additive on plastic deformation for crush-boxes with closed-cell metal foams, Part I: Al-composite foam compression response

AbstractIn this paper, we investigate effect of Fe–intermetallic compounds on plastic deformation of closed-cell composite Aluminum Foam as filler of thin-walled tubes. However, deformation of the Aluminum foam-filled thin-walled tubes as crushed-box will be presented in Part (II). Composite foams of AlSi7SiC3 and AlSi7SiC3-(Fe) as closed cell were synthesized by powder metallurgy foaming metho...

Acoustic damping performance of aluminum nanocomposite foams with different additive of carbon nanotubes and comparison that with conventional rockwool (Research Article)

Open cell aluminum foams have good acoustic dampening properties. In this research, in order to improve the sound damping capacity of these foams, 0.9, 1.5 and 3wt% carbon nanotubes were added to the aluminum foam. Foams were produced by the space holder method in powder metallurgy. The results showed that Al-0.9wt%CNT nanocomposite foam had the highest average sound transmission loss in the fr...

Simulation of Foaming and Deformation for Composite Aluminum Foams

In this study, at the first stage, the rupture criterion of bubbles wall in Aluminum metal foam liquid was investigated by using Lattice Boltzmann. The two phases modeling were accomplished by using a modified Shan-Chen model. This model was run for several bubbles in A356+3wt.%SiC melt system. Then, bubbles morphologies (virtual metallographic) for A356+3wt.%SiC foams were simulated. Results s...

Compression and low-velocity impact behavior of aluminum syntactic foam

We report quasi-static compression and impact behavior of aluminum syntactic foams (ASF) produced by melt infiltration. Aluminum syntactic foams with relative density of 0.46 were produced using hollow alumina spheres (4.45 mm and 3.05 mm) randomly situated in a mold and two types of aluminum alloy (1100 and 6061). The impact behavior was investigated using an instrumented drop tower. We invest...

Preparation of PMMA/MWNTs Nanocomposite Microcellular Foams by In-situ Generation of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

Nanocomposites containing poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and surface functionalized Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWNTs) were synthesized. The dispersion of MWNTs in PMMA was characterized using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM).The synthesized nanocomposites were successfully foamed using a simple method based on the in-situ generation of supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2</sub...
